Summer Workshop

British Sign Language Level 1 Course for 13 -15 Year Olds: Part 1

Join us this summer for ten days of signing and making new friends! Then come back for Part 2 in October half term!

In the first part of this course you will learn about the Deaf community and its culture and gain a British Sign Language (BSL) Level 1 qualification.

The second part of the course will cover: Deaf awareness, effective communication and technology and using your learning in the JDA community including giving presentations in schools.

The idea for this event came from a lovely 14 year old, Lorna, who was inspired to learn BSL after meeting a deaf friend who explained to her the challenges she faces daily.

Here is the video she made to inspire other young people to join her.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • communicate effectively with deaf people
  • understand the challenges of being deaf
  • use your new skills, for example to babysit deaf children or be a mentor for deaf young people
  • understand the importance of protecting your hearing
  • volunteer for JDA and our various client groups
  • enhance your CV and contribute to Duke of Edinburgh award
  • help break down the barriers between deaf and hearing people.

The first part of the course will take place Monday to Friday, 10am-5pm, between 22 July - 2 August, at Crouch End Picture House, 165 Tottenham Lane, London, N8 9BY.

The entire course fee is £200 and includes exam fees.

Places are limited to 16 and can be booked via https://jda.charitycheckout.co.uk/summer
